Immunohistology

Immunoperoxidase and immunofluorescence tissue stains permit a more certain evaluation of cell identity and function in order to diagnose disease. The principle behind this biochemical technique lies in the interactions between antigens found within the cell and the antibodies that bind to these antigens. Tissue samples are incubated with a specific antibody (Fluorescent labeled) with high affinity for a marker antigen that could be present in the tissue. If the antigen in question is present in the sample, then the marked antibody will bind, revealing previously unseen morphologic and structural features of the tissue.

Utilization of immunohistological methods allows our pathologists to evaluate tumors, renal biopsies, and skin biopsies. This standard of care is invaluable for the identification of ultrastructural changes that can be of diagnostic significance. Cellular phenotypes can be directly visualized via morphology. Slides remain permanently labeled, and can thus be stored for future use. Immunohistological methods can help pathologists establish cellular origins to poorly differentiated tumors, classify lymphomas and leukemias, detect micrometastases in tissue, identify and qualitatively estimate hormone receptor and prognostic marker distribution for tumor evaluation, and isolate viral or other infective agent antigens.
