Hematopathology

We are a full service hematology and surgical pathology laboratory which provides the following services:

  1. Review of bone marrow and lymph node morphology.
    a. Review of bone marrow biopsies for evaluation of anemias, blood cytopenias (decreased blood counts), hematologic disorders, such as chronic myelogenous leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes, and evaluation of leukemia and lymphoma.
    b. Lymph node pathology is also reviewed for evaluation of lymphomas and neoplasms.
    c. Morphologic evaluation of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders.

  2. Hematology laboratory evaluation studies
    a. Complete blood count analysis (CBC) and many other automated indices are routinely performed at our laboratory
    b. Morphologic interpretation of peripheral smears for red cell, white cell and platelet changes

  3. Coagulation/hemostasis evaluation
    a. Automated evaluation of routine coagulation studies (i.e. PT/PTT/INR)
    b. Also full evaluation of coagulopathies with testing for:

    i. Factor V Lieden, Prothrombin gene mutation, lupus anticoagulant, Protein C & S, homocysteine levels

    ii. Von Willebrand’s antigen, Factor VIII levels, ristocestin cofactor activity (we do not perform multimer analysis)

    iii. Platelet aggregation studies

    iv. Platelet function analysis (PFA) to evaluate for von-Willebrand disease, aspirin effect and limited platelet function defects

    v. Thrombo-elastograph studies (TEG) to evaluate the coagulation system as a whole

    vi. Plavix effect studies by Accumetrix testing


  4. Interpretation of flow cytometry:
    a. Flow cytometry is a complex testing system for evaluation of leukemia and lymphomas
    b. We provide professional interpretation of flow plots for evaluation of leukemias, lymphomas and myelodyplastic syndromes (NOTE: only professional interpretation provided).
